What Does 'Precision' Mean on a Vintage Rolex Watch?

If you have come across a vintage Rolex with the word Precision on the dial, you may well have wondered what it signifies - and whether it means the watch is somehow more, or less, than other Rolexes. It is one of the more misunderstood terms in vintage Rolex collecting, and the answer is genuinely interesting - and reassuring. Here is everything you need to know.

What Does Precision Mean?

On a vintage Rolex, the word Precision indicates that the watch is fitted with a quality Rolex movement that was not submitted for official chronometer certification. In other words, it denotes a fine, reliable Rolex movement - just one that did not carry the additional, officially certified chronometer rating.

This needs a little explaining, because to understand Precision, you first need to understand what a chronometer is.

Chronometer vs Precision - the Key Distinction

A chronometer, as we explain in our guide to what a chronometer is, is a watch whose movement has been independently tested and officially certified to meet exceptionally strict standards of accuracy. It is a formal, earned designation, awarded only after rigorous testing.

Rolex is famous for its chronometer-certified watches - many Rolex dials proudly bear the words Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified. These watches carried movements that had passed official chronometer testing.

The Precision designation, by contrast, was used on Rolex watches whose movements were not submitted for this official certification. Crucially, this does not mean the movements were poor - far from it. They were still quality Rolex movements, well made and reliable. They simply had not gone through the formal, and costly, chronometer certification process, and so could not be labelled as chronometers.

So a Rolex Precision is a genuine, quality Rolex - just not an officially certified chronometer.

The Appeal of the Vintage Rolex Precision

For collectors today, this makes vintage Rolex Precision models genuinely appealing. They offer authentic Rolex heritage, quality, and craftsmanship - very often in beautiful, elegant dress watch form - at prices that can be more accessible than the equivalent chronometer-certified pieces.

Many vintage Precision models are lovely, refined dress watches, frequently in solid gold, with all the elegance and prestige of the Rolex name. As we discuss in our guide to dress watches, an elegant vintage Rolex Precision is a genuinely special thing to own - a real Rolex, with real heritage, in a refined and wearable form.

You will also see the term Oyster Precision, which combines the waterproof Oyster case, as we explain in our guide to what Oyster means, with a Precision (non-chronometer) movement - offering Rolex's robust waterproof case in a Precision model.
