What Does 'Incabloc' Mean on a Vintage Watch?

If you have looked at a vintage watch dial, or read a description of one, you may well have come across the word Incabloc. It is one of the most commonly seen names in all of vintage watchmaking, yet it puzzles many owners. The good news is that its meaning is genuinely reassuring - it is a mark of quality engineering. Here is everything you need to know.

What Does Incabloc Mean?

Incabloc is the name of a shock protection system - a mechanism designed to protect the delicate parts of a watch movement from damage caused by knocks, drops, and impacts. When a vintage watch dial or movement says Incabloc, it simply means the watch is fitted with this well-known shock protection system.

Incabloc was by far the most famous and widely used shock protection system in the watch industry, fitted to an enormous number of watches from the mid-twentieth century onwards. Its name became so common that it is almost synonymous with shock protection itself, as we explore in our guide to why a vintage watch says shock resisting on it. Far from being a cause for concern, the Incabloc marking is a genuine mark of quality.

What is Being Protected?

To understand why Incabloc matters, it helps to know what it protects. The heart of a mechanical watch is the balance wheel, which swings back and forth to regulate the timekeeping. This balance wheel spins on a very fine, very delicate pivot - the balance staff - whose tips are extraordinarily thin, finer than a hair.

These delicate pivots are one of the most vulnerable parts of the entire movement. A sharp knock or a drop could easily snap them, stopping the watch and requiring a repair. Because a watch is worn on the wrist - one of the most active and exposed parts of the body - this was a genuine and common problem. Shock protection systems like Incabloc were developed to solve it.

How Does Incabloc Work?

The Incabloc system is genuinely clever. Rather than fixing the delicate balance pivots rigidly in place, it mounts them in tiny spring-loaded jewel settings - using the little jewelled bearings we discuss in our guide to what 17 jewels means.

Under normal running, these spring-loaded settings hold the pivots precisely in position, allowing the watch to keep accurate time. But when the watch receives a sharp knock, the springs allow the delicate pivots to move slightly and absorb the shock, before springing back into their exact position afterwards. In effect, the vulnerable parts are allowed to flex and give way under impact rather than snapping - much like a shock absorber on a car. It is a beautifully simple idea that dramatically reduces the risk of a broken balance staff.

Why It Was Advertised on the Dial

A fair question is why Incabloc was so often printed on the dial. The answer is that, in the watchmaking of the mid-twentieth century, shock protection was a genuine selling point. A watch that could survive knocks and drops was a real advantage, particularly as watches became everyday items worn during active lives, and manufacturers were keen to let buyers know their watches were protected.

Printing Incabloc on the dial was, in effect, a mark of quality and reassurance - a way of telling the buyer that this was a robust, well-engineered watch. It sits alongside other reassuring dial markings of the era, such as Antimagnetic, as we discuss in our guide to what antimagnetic means.
